The Threat of Coronavirus Outbreaks

We need to be knowledgeable to protect ourselves from this life-threatening virus

Often causing infections in the nose and throat, most coronaviruses are nothing much to worry about because it will soon subside as our body immunity fights back against the infection. Common coronaviruses that affect humans usually cause flu, runny nose, cough, sore throat, fever, and headache. These infections are usually transmitted to us from other people when we go to public places, and almost every person would contract it at least once in their lifetime. However, there are certain strains of this virus that have proven to be fatally dangerous to humans and recently, a new strain has been found to originate from Wuhan, China and it has spread to various countries in Asia and Europe. The death toll has reached dozens of people, while over a thousand others are confirmed to be infected. This virus is potentially as deadly as the previous outbreaks Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

Becoming a Pandemic

Proven to spread from animal-to-human, and human-to-human, the 2019-nCoV strain of virus also known as the Wuhan Virus has been identified to have originated from a wet market in the city of Wuhan, which is home to a population of 11 million people. As of writing, there have already been confirmed cases of the virus in Malaysia, from a family of China nationals who had entered the country from Singapore. Evidently, this epidemic from China is becoming a pandemic overnight and although the authorities on global and local level are trying their level best to contain this outbreak, many precautionary steps need to be taken by the public to mitigate being infected. We’ll explore some of these preventive measures.

Preventing the Flu

Coming across like a normal flu, the 2019-nCoV infection can spread to masses easily and that is why we need to be knowledgeable in taking preventive measures to protect our family and ourselves from this deadly threat. Before this outbreak came about, there were already a high number of influenza cases as it was nicknamed the flu-season where Influenza A vaccines have been in shortage in this region. Whether or not we were able to get the vaccine, we still have to consciously be mindful of our surroundings and our hygiene practices.

Washing and Sanitizing

A simple yet effective way is to wash our hands with soap often. Because we tend to touch all kinds of things throughout the day, we are bound to come into contact with various bacteria and viruses. Using adequate water to wash our hands with soap for at least 20 seconds will significantly reduce the number of microorganisms on the surface of our hands and those hidden under our fingernails. Do avoid touching our face especially the eyes, nose or mouth when our hands are unwashed, because viruses can easily get into our bodies through these touch points. The surfaces that we frequently touch such as door handles, light switches, water faucets should also be frequently sterilized before the waiting bacteria and viruses get onto our hands again.

Avoid Close Contact with The Sick

Although we may be feeling fine and are generally healthy, but it can be too late to regret it when we finally catch the flu from others. In public places especially when someone is visibly suffering from a cough or flu, do stay far away as the virus can be airborne. Meanwhile, when we cough and sneeze, do cough or sneeze into a tissue before quickly throwing it away. If there is no tissue in sight, aim for our elbows and not our hands. If we are feeling unwell, avoid going out to places where there are crowds because we might infect others or may pick-up an infection due to lower immunity. Do check the symptoms that persists and get medical attention if necessary.
