Living a Healthier 2019

By Admin • April 18, 2022

We’ve now entered into 2019 and most of us welcomed the new year with many hopes and aspirations. Earning a promotion, receiving an increment, moving into a more comfortable home, having a new pet, and traveling to new places may be among the list of things we have in store for the year. But what would a vacation mean if you constantly find yourself breathless from walking? Or what good does a promotion do for your family if you’re more stressed up than ever? As we aim for a better quality of life, we also recognize that we need a healthier body to achieve these targets.

Living a healthier life is indeed a long term commitment, but at the same time it is also very well within reach. Regardless of our economic and social differences, living a healthier 2019 is just as achievable for all of us so long as we stay committed and disciplined to the goals that we have set. It matters not if we can afford a fancy gym membership or expensive health supplements, the most important driver is determination. Here we will explore some simple yet effective lifestyle changes to lead you towards a healthier self starting this very year.

1. Stop Procastinating

“Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today” remember this saying? If we want to get in shape, learn a new skill or work towards our goals, just remember that nothing comes without effort and we have to begin somewhere. The place and time to start is here and now. If you have been meaning to read the new book you bought, start by reading one page. You may think it sounds silly or pointless, but the point is to master the habit of ‘Now’.

2. Be More Active

Staying active will help you live a healthier and happier life in many ways. Being active and exercising regularly will help to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. If you are fortunate to be able to afford a good gym membership, be sure to find a gym buddy who can motivate you to go together. Constantly remind yourself to workout and sweat it out. Apart from the gym, there are also many ways to be active, some are literally free of charge. You can practice yoga at home, the stretching from yoga will increase your flexibility, increase muscle strength and help to maintain a balanced metabolism. At your workplace, you can also make it a point to take the stairs instead of the elevator. Initially we may have to drag our feet to the park but believe me that very soon your body will be accustomed to it.

3. Eat Healthier

Having a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet can do you more good than you know. Be sure your veggie and fruits are of assorted colors, this is nature’s way of telling us what to eat to have balanced nutrients. Whenever possible, try to eat wholegrain over polished bread. Good fats are also not to be missed, they can be found in avocado, cheese, yogurt, nuts, olives, seeds, certain fish, and dark chocolates.

4. Spend More Time With Family

Most working adults find themselves engrossed with work all day and find little time for themselves let alone their families. If you happen to be one of them, let 2019 be the year that you make a change. Work around your schedule and make more time for your family, take your spouse out for a date and dinner and spend time reading at home together. If you have children, be sure to listen to them and tell them stories (even if they are teenagers, share your experiences with them!) to create the family bond.  Never forget to spend quality time with your elders by putting down your phone because one day when you look up, they may not be here anymore. When children observe your filial piety towards your parents and elders, it helps to inculcate the same virtues in them.

5. Have More Quality Sleep

Ever find yourself feeling fatigued and lethargic even after waking up from a night’s sleep? That could mean that your body is trying to recover from some unhealthy sleeping patterns that you have. Your body needs good quality sleep and it can be determined by the amount of time you take to fall asleep in bed, taking more than 30 minutes is not a good sign. Other indications of quality sleep includes not being awake for more than 20 minutes and also not waking up more than once throughout your bed time. Having a more routine sleep schedule helps to regulate your body’s clock to fall asleep easier, putting away your mobile devices and staying away from bright lights will also help to reduce excitement and stress which in turn, gets you quality sleep.

6. Stop Buying The Unnecessary

What has my spending got to do with my health and how are they correlated, you ask? Well, the more we do online browsing and walking around the malls, the more likely we are to be tempted to buy things that we do not really need. Impulsive shopping can very easily deplete our savings and when we do not have a positive cash flow, it is difficult to focus on the things that are truly important to us. Feel like buying that latest phone in the market? Here is where you should procrastinate. Sit on the idea/impulse until it goes away or until you actually need it. Other things you can do include eating a little healthier but less expensive and also picking up more affordable hobbies.

7. Be With The Nature and Reduce Stress

The older folks would definitely have told you to go out and spend more time in nature, and it is not without good reason too. Being around greenery itself will keep depression away while boosting your immunity. Spending adequate time out in the sun lets your body generate vitamin D which plays a big role in maintaining strong and healthy bones in your body. Lack of it is associated with muscle weakness and depression. Apart from the above, the outdoors can also help to improve memory, creativity and other cognitive functions. Here is an inexpensive new hobby for you.

8. Live In A Cleaner Home

Living in a sparkling clean home is undeniably what we all want to do, but at the same time it is no walk in the park (like the tip above). Sometimes instead of doing the right thing of cleaning and sanitizing the house, we tend to sweep things under the carpet, by that we mean simply chucking away our stuff in the storeroom. Out of sight, out of mind right? Bad idea. The more unused items we keep, the more exposed and vulnerable we are to sickness and infections. Spend a little time each day to clean the house even just for 5 or 10 minutes, you can do wonders! In the meantime, make it a habit to clean up after every time you make a mess. Once the house gets too messy, you won’t know where to begin.
